As a workaround you could use `launchctl export` which prints the
environment to be exported. Does it contain DISPLAY?

Make sure DISPLAY is not overwritten anywhere in scripts:
$ grep DISPLAY ~/.bash* ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist
$ grep -R DISPLAY /opt/local/etc /etc
