I'm guessing it would have worked. One issue with macports is the
inability to have dependencies on specific variants, so I'm fairly
confident that macports would have been happy to attempt to install
gri with texlive at basic. Whether or not it would succeed would depend
on whether the basic variant had everything that it actually needed to
build.
Looking at the available variants is something that you should do if
you are interested in customizing your install like this, so you're on
the right track I think.
