Because that fails horribly for the reasons I mentioned in my previous email....

Additionally, there is no standard way to really check what versions of bits are on a particular system.  You can grep .la files, .pc files, check the version number in the dylib, check output from 'someapp --version' ... that is too hacky and cumbersome to be reliable.  We'd rather put effort into something that is worth it.
