MacPorts OS X 10.6.2 install problem

Installed X11 and Xcode Tools on a MacMini in 10.6.2, then tried to install MacPorts !.8.2 using the package installer. Following a "port" command, I was presented with:

Warning: No default port source specified in /opt/local/etc/macports/sources.conf, using last source as default
Warning: No index(es) found! Have you synced your source indexes?
MacPorts 1.8.2

Thought I could solve this by way of a self update, which returned:

sudo port -dv selfupdate
Password:
Warning: No default port source specified in /opt/local/etc/macports/sources.conf, using last source as default
Warning: No index(es) found! Have you synced your source indexes?

Being a UNIX noob, my next step is going to be to uninstall MacPorts and start again - unless there's a fix someone could help me with.

TIA

Ian
