Many thanks Ryan, that was the issue and it fixed it.  I had the same issue
with python, but had forgotten.
Is it best to delete the native version of perl for simplicity and the
create an alias or symbolic link to from /usr/bin/perl
to #!/opt/local/bin/perl?  Or is there a better way?
