atlas depends on gcc43 *and* gcc44 ???

The gcc44 build with port 1.8.2 on 10.6.3 isn't building for me. It
looks like it is failing while building gcj.

Switching compilers is often a ticket to trouble, is there a reason
for the switch to gcc44?
