macports 1.7 and 1.8

Hi
I installed macports 1.7 on my snow leopard and found it is for OSX 
10.5. Then installed macports 1.8. Is the 1.7 version been updated in my 
computer or still hanging there idly? If it is of no use, how do I 
remove it? Thanks.
