I've used MacPorts to pull in dependencies for stuff I have done for $WORK where I want to build/test/profile on my Mac but eventually deploy on something else.

Unless there is some other port that needs to (or will need to) depend on the bindings being there, I don't think it makes much of a difference if they are a variant or a separate port.
