This means it's failing to talk to the server at all.
On 10.6.x, launchd will start the server automatically and put a special
$DISPLAY in the environment to trigger it. (You may need to twiddle launchd
plists if you want the MacPorts one autostarted instead of the system one;
on 10.6 X11 is installed by default.) If you change $DISPLAY then things
will break and you will get the above error from any X11 program unless the
server happens to (a) already be running (b) on :0.0.
