local patches

Hi, I'm new to macports and this list.

I installed mediatomb, but some functionality is missing.
Youtube/Apple preview changed.
However, at <http://sourceforge.net/projects/mediatomb/forums/forum/440751/topic/3816230>
seems
to be a fix. but it is not yet in macports.
So - were does the downloaded source end up? in what dir?
I cannot find it...

can I just make a patch, and tell macports to use it? Or what is the
common way here.
I can, if I find the files, issue a make && make install again?
or will that dowload the source from macports again, overwriting the changes?

Please bear with me if this is common knowledge.
