Trouble starting mysql5-server @5.1.49

Running Mac OS 10.5.8 on PPC G4.

Trying to start the installed port mysql5-server @5.1.49.

First installed mysql5 @5.1.49 with its dependencies.

Then installed the port mysql5-server @5.1.49. I am unable to start the server. This is the error message returned in the system.log is ERROR! Manager of pid-file quit without updating file.

Any help would be appreciated!
