Okay, so it has to be something gcc generates different here in Apple's patched 
version.

To debug this behaviour, using dwarfdump(1) on the same binary compiled with 
/usr/bin/gcc-4.2 and /opt/local/bin/gcc-mp-4.5 might be a good start.
