OK ... looks better now ... (didn't touch a2p) ... and no -f forcing ...

iMac:~ mark$ sudo port deactivate perl5.8 @5.8.9_3
--->  Deactivating perl5.8 @5.8.9_3

iMac:~ mark$ sudo port activate perl5 @5.12.3_0+perl5_12
--->  Computing dependencies for perl5
--->  Activating perl5 @5.12.3_0+perl5_12
--->  Cleaning perl5

iMac:~ mark$ sudo port installed | grep perl
  perl5 @5.12.3_0+perl5_12 (active)
  perl5.12 @5.12.3_0 (active)
