You forgetting something here: Most users actually give a s**t which
Perl version is installed. All they want is to compile some port which
depends on Perl.

And those user don't want to recognize anything about Perl. And they
should not be forced to do so as well. They might not even know that
Perl exist. For those User it should “just work”.
