you probably didn't need the -f
Since you wanted to have the 2010 version active, you could have done
sudo port uninstall textlive-common @2009_1
and then
sudo port activate textlive-common
(as there would only be one installed at that point, so it would be unambiguous)
If you wanted to keep 2009_1 around (so you can switch back and fort quickly), you could have just deactivated it and activated 2010_1:
sudo port deactivate textlive-common @2009_1
sudo port activate textlive_common @2010_1
