I'm effectively unable to use port (I have version 1.9.2) now on my Mac using OS 10.6.5. I tried using it today to get VLC, but have had similar problems in the past getting other ports. Here is the content of messages:

[Users/scofield] > install VLC
--->  Computing dependencies for p5-locale-gettext
--->  Configuring p5-locale-gettext
Error: Target org.macports.configure returned: configure failure: shell command failed (see log for details)
Log for p5-locale-gettext is at: /opt/local/var/macports/logs/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_ports_perl_p5-locale-gettext/main.log
Error: Unable to upgrade port: 1
Error: Unable to execute port: upgrade autoconf failed

I don't know if it is relevant, but when I type "gcc --version" at the terminal prompt, I get

i686-apple-darwin10-gcc-4.2.1 (GCC) 4.2.1 (Apple Inc. build 5664)

which is different than the version of gcc mentioned in the log file.
