Macports group instead of macports user?

Sure, some ports require root. Those portfiles should include the phrase "install.asroot yes" (or similarly for other phases, if required). Since this feature hasn't been on by default before, not all port authors will have tried MacPorts in this configuration, and some ports that should include this phrase do not, and you will encounter an installation failure. As with any other bug in MacPorts, you would file an issue in our issue tracker so that we can resolve it.
