looks like a tiny patch to util.c makes it build (save_errno -> aprerr). I haven't tested it though.

You wouldn't happen to have a pointer to the upstream bug report for this? If it (or something like it) has been accepted upstream, it would be pretty straightforward to include it with macports, so we don't need to block apache2 from being upgraded.
