My guess now is that you don't actually have a custom ~/.xinitrc.d script for twm, but instead teh default xinitrc is trying twm because it can't find a quartz-wm.  Please install the quartz-wm port, and I think it should work.  I'll update the dependencies.

bin/quartz-vm and it's man1 pages are the only thing that live outside of /usr/X11 and its LauchAgents/Daemons.
