"no matching architecture in universal wrapper while executing"

Dear all,

I am running OSX 10.6.8 and I would like to use macports to fix some
library incompatibility problem ( "Reason: Incompatible library version:
libXft.2.dylib requires version 6.0.0 or later, but libfontconfig.1.dylib
provides version 5.0.0" )

But when I do:
" sudo /opt/local/bin/port install freetype "

I get the following:

dlopen(/opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/macports1.0/MacPorts.dylib, 10): no
suitable image found.  Did find:
    /opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/macports1.0/MacPorts.dylib: no matching
architecture in universal wrapper
    while executing
"load /opt/local/share/macports/Tcl/macports1.0/MacPorts.dylib"
    ("package ifneeded macports 1.0" script)
    invoked from within
"package require macports"
    (file "/opt/local/bin/port" line 38)

Any help would be very much appreciated!
