Error on "sudo port -v upgrade outdated"

It would probably be in / if you're using `sudo port...` and ~/ if using `port...`.

My guess is the crash log would start with gcc in the name.

Also note that Xcode is not updated via Mac OS X's Software Update utility on OS versions prior to 10.6, and is updated via the Mac App Store on 10.7.
