Apple shipped Xserves with 8 hyper-threaded cores (which appear to the OS as 16 virtual cores) in 2009 and 12-core (24-virtual-core) Mac Pros in 2010...

But yes, reinstalling ports can take some time. Fortunately it's not something you have to do every day.
