I closed the terminal and did the following:

Last login: Tue May 15 19:44:41 on ttys000
You have new mail.
jaspersmbp:~ jasper$ gedit
-bash: gedit: command not found
jaspersmbp:~ jasper$ rails
Rails is not currently installed on this system. To get the latest version,
simply type:

    $ sudo gem install rails

You can then rerun your "rails" command.
jaspersmbp:~ jasper$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin
jaspersmbp:~ jasper$

so ... no joy as of yet..
