gcc44 installs correctly but default gcc is still used

The other stuff is what PATH is normally set to.

When you do that export in .profile
> export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH

you are using the old PATH variable with the $PATH part. That's where it comes from ;)
But if you wonder where the system sets this default path... then I can't help you ;)
