error trying to install p5.12-locale-gettext

I get the following on Lion (10.7.4):

sudo port install p5.12-locale-gettext
Error: Unable to execute port: couldn't open
"/opt/local/var/macports/build/_opt_local_var_macports_sources_rsync.macports.org_release_tarballs_ports_perl_p5-locale-gettext/p5.12-locale-gettext/work/.macports.p5.12-locale-gettext.state":
permission denied

This is right after a fresh install of macports for Lion.  Did selfupdate,
then tried this and got error.

How do I fix this?
