Should I uninstall? If not, how to fix major dependency issues?

Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't remove any existing build
directories, and that's what you are tripping over. You might want to
"sudo port clean all" to make sure there's no garbage still lying around,
as there is in the case of zlib. (This will take a while.)
