I think it pretty much answers what you're looking for, and is guided step by step. Also look for the other "rsync"-tagged posts.
However, your requirement calls for Time Machine, as it does exactly what you are requiring. You may have to inquire first why Time Machine wouldn't be suitable, as you essentially call to recreate TM's functionality with a rsync-based script.
