Thanks Derek, but sadly it seems I have entered the circle of dependency hell. Trying to deactivate libstdcxx produces the following messages

The following installed ports are outdated:

harfbuzz 0.9.12_0 < 0.9.16_0

llvm-3.0 3.0_11 < 3.0_12
p5.14-extutils-f77 1.160.0_3 < 1.170.0_0
perl5.12 5.12.4_1 < 5.12.4_2
php5 5.3.21_0 < 5.3.23_0
php5-mysql 5.3.21_0 < 5.3.23_0
php5-postgresql 5.3.21_0 < 5.3.23_0
postgis 1.5.5_0 < 1.5.8_0
postgresql91 9.1.8_0 < 9.1.9_0
postgresql91-server 9.1.8_0 < 9.1.9_0
R 2.15.2_2 < 3.0.0_0

And I can't upgrade most of the above because of Perl 5.12.

There are links to several tickets there. The quick answer may be to deactivate libstdcxx, upgrade perl5.12, then activate libstdcxx. I believe the perl5.12 port is universal but libstdcxx is not (or the other way around).
