I checked the source for the version currently in Debian/Testing: O_CLOEXEC is not passed to open() there.

What I meant and thought to understand is that +startupitem specified a behaviour that is (now) the default, i.e. it is no longer necessary to ask for it by selecting this variant. Am I wrong?
