you would start presumably with the homepage listed in 'port info' for the port.

One thing I noticed is that our port isn't the latest version of smartmontools, so upstream would probably want us to update that first. You can open a ticket in Macports trac to ask the smartmontools maintainer to update it to 6.3 (and if you can provide a patch to do so, it's more likely to happen quickly) :)
