problem installing latest (and older) Macports

If you wanted to go this route, then you would install it, per our normal installation instructions on our web site. But:
 
> I don't think I care about my old MacPorts installation, I just want a current one.

Then you can follow the uninstallation instructions in our guide, followed by the installation instructions.
