where does macports installs programs?

Thanks Ryan. I will try that for the unistall.
However, it is still puzzling me why I have a different result on the two macs. OK, they have a slightly different OS (10.7.5 the one that works, 10.8.2 the one that does not) but would that be the case? I have used the same list of commands to do the installation... why do you think uninstalling root should not be necessary?
