Warning, reconsider doing an upgrade to a port

I did a :
sudo port upgrade alpine

And it appears it is trying to install countless ports completely 
unrelated to the port requested.

For example it installed "lame" an audio manipulation port which has 
nothing to do with alpine an email client.

Some of my existing ports were installed from scratch as though they did 
not exist.

/opt/local/bin is now full of things I did not want.  An "option c" 
stopped it with what unknown harm to existing previous ports.

Any suggestions to correct this mess?
