Did you install an X server? Installing an X11-based program will only
install the client libraries, since you may have a server via XQuartz or an
older OS X release, or even be intending to use it via SSH forwarding from
e.g. Linux.

If you want to install a server via MacPorts, install the xorg-server and
xinit ports. You will have to log out and back in to activate the launchd
hooks that actually start the server. Otherwise, see
http://xquartz.macosforge.org for an installer package.

(OS X used to come with an X server; this hasn't been the case since (IIRC)
Mountain Lion, instead there is a stub that asks if you want to install
XQuartz and if so sends you to xquartz.macosforge.org.)
