It looks like the R tcltk stuff assumes that several X11-specific things
are present and therefore won't work with quartz. The upstream R developers
would need to conditionalize those on X11 instead of blindly assuming that
tk always implies the use of X11.

(I note the upstream builds of the latest version also assume X11 for
tcltk.)
