IIRC they don't recommend anything like that, but it's been a while I tried it.

Gentoo prefix is basically "Gentoo Linux under whatever unixy OS you're on". It's Gentoo installed in a prefix, which you pick, and under/for which the whole thing is built from scratch, Gentoo-style.
