Updating php56-apache2handler gives configure error

My misunderstanding: I didn't realize that just because "which perl5" showed "/opt/local/bin/perl5" and I had an active perl5.xx installed, I still had to do the step you showed.
My confusion, no doubt, is due to the different mechanism for specifying the perl version, as compared to the usual "port select" method.
(I've updated the trac ticket I filed.)
