After a little research, it sounds like Homebrew installs all its packages in nonstandard locations, and "brew link" makes a link to those nonstandard locations in the standard locations. In contrast, MacPorts installs most of its packages to the standard locations to begin with, so in that sense, you can consider MacPorts packages to already be "linked", in Homebrew's parlance.
