2.3.4 on 10.9: can't "port install openmotif +universal"

I restarted from scratch by doing

rm -rf \
    /opt/local \
    /Applications/DarwinPorts \
    /Applications/MacPorts \
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.* \
    /Library/Receipts/DarwinPorts*.pkg \
    /Library/Receipts/MacPorts*.pkg \
    /Library/StartupItems/DarwinPortsStartup \
    /Library/Tcl/darwinports1.0 \
    /Library/Tcl/macports1.0 \
    ~/.macports

and installing MacPorts-2.3.4-10.9-Mavericks.pkg on 10.9.5 (fully
updated with the latest appstore updates, including Xcode 7.1 Build
version 7B91b).  Then after doing "port selfupdate" I did:

megamac# port install openmotif +universal

Error: org.macports.archivefetch for port openmotif returned: xorg-libXt must be installed with +flat_namespace.
