On OS X 10.6.8, Xcode 3.2.6 is the recommended version. Xcode 4 for Snow Leopard was never available for free; you had to have a paid developer membership to get a copy. As such, most MacPorts users did not try this configuration, so more problems are likely to be encountered if you use that configuration.
Mihai attached a patch to that ticket that you could try. I'll try it now on my Snow Leopard system and, assuming it works, I'll commit it.
