It looks like this has to do with the great news about MaxCDN announced on March 13th 2016. No wonder everything seemed faster (it was a bit disorienting to a MacPorts long timer like me). Its great to see MacPorts is thriving. That said, we must be ever more vigilant about our Macs and iOS machines, including MacPorts security, given the nefarious world we live in (including, regrettably, the so-called "friendly fire").

It doesn't directly have to do with the addition of MaxCDN to our infrastructure last month. We now use the CDN to deliver distfiles and binary packages to you faster, but we have been building and distributing binary packages for years already. This feature was added to MacPorts in version 2.0.0.

The build system was originally set up with Snow Leopard back in 2011, and we've been adding OS versions to it over time.

To ease your mind, the packages our build servers produce are signed with our private key, and MacPorts on your system will verify that signature using our public key before installing it.
