But what version does ffmpeg require, how much older is the last version that support libvpx < 1.6, and does that version even support 10.5 and 10.4 (or do newer versions work sufficiently well to justify dropping libvpx support for it)?

IOW, yes, you'd need user feedback to know what compromise to make here.
