xephem seg faults on Mojave

on Mojave, with Xcode 10.0:

$ xephem

_XmGetDefaultDisplay cannot be used prior to VendorS.Initialize, returns NULL
[1]    34379 segmentation fault  xephem

Any troubleshooting advice is appreciated.
