gimp doesn't open images

I have here on Lion:

  exiv2 @0.27_1 (active) platform='darwin 11' archs='x86_64' date='2019-01-22T23:13:19+0100'

  gimp2 @2.10.6_3+python27+quartz platform='darwin 11' archs='x86_64' date='2018-11-09T18:11:58+0100'
  gimp2 @2.10.8_3+python27+quartz (active) platform='darwin 11' archs='x86_64' date='2019-01-25T01:25:19+0100'

looks like the same versions as yours?
2.10.6 worked for me fine.

I have a very similar issue on Leopard… although there I have some local patches, so I thought it might be them, at first, but now I think something else is wrong…
