Sean, you should know you can keep any port you want around forever, with 30 seconds effort. You're not stuck with arbitrary decisions...MacPorts gives you total power here.

Look up local portfile repositories in the guide...I have hundreds of ports configured properly for my needs, and have kept around many that I wanted, even when someone went on a cleanup mission...
