XV/GIMP/etc: Can't open display

Maybe setting the DISPLAY is the issue. On my machine, DISPLAY in a new 
terminal session is


and presumably this is the mechanism by which Xquartz is triggered to 
launch when a process in Terminal accesses DISPLAY.
