You are right this is the only way!
The system include files are different, the MacPorts building are different,
the MacPorts dependencies are different, the libraries are different.
If you wanted to do this you would also have to use a different PATH
and a different LD_LIBRARY_PATH. There are more easier path to make a nightmare
of one's life.
