I suspect you are running your terminal or shell through Rosetta as in 
this ticket: <https://trac.macports.org/ticket/70512>

A fresh installation from the .pkg should work OK as long as you use a 
native terminal and shell. If you'd like to test a hopefully better fix, 
you could apply these four changes to your local files:
