The above is the correct solution. 

What Ken said about making a unified decision about +x11 or +quartz across all ports, and that MacPorts defaults to +x11, is generally true, but the tk port is an exception in that its variant choice can be changed without affecting other ports and in that its default was recently changed from +x11 to +quartz.
