using port:usbmuxd instead of the system version on (older) Macs?

Hi,
I just discovered that my new refurb. iPhoneSE2 won't connect to iTunes on OS X 10.9.5 while the 1st gen iPhoneSE still did (couldn't apply updates on it, but could sync and back it up). Bummer...
MSWin machine to the rescue, but I have a hunch this might have something to do with the running version of usbmuxd because the idevice* utilities from port:libimobiledevice also won't connect. The same version does connect fine on my Linux rig.
So the question is if it's possible to replace the system usbmuxd from inside the MobileSync framework with the new(est) one from MacPorts and if so, how. A quick test with the -X option to kill any running instances didn't work as none were detected.
Thanks!
R.
